Girly Girl

How does pearls and pastel pink sound to you? Well, they remind me of chicness and elegance.

For the longest time, I've been trying to determine who I am and what kind of style I have. I felt that I had to put my style into a specific fashion category in order to contain the sense of being normal and secure. Finding this answer was just like chasing after a string- I was once so close but then became so far again. Sometimes I like anything girly and dreamy; sometimes I'm into everything that is edgy and bold; and sometimes I'm crazy about styles that are eclectic and unpredictable. With the consistent changes my mind was going through, my heart was also beeping like crazy. Did I have this-skirt-is-so-not-me kind of moment? Of course. Have I experienced that I-don't-know-what-I-am-wearing type of day? For sure. So recently (yes, I didn't think this through till very recent), I started to ask myself: "Why do I have to put a label on my style?"
To draw a conclusion, I don't think we HAVE TO match an accurate answer to the question of who I am and what kind of style I have. Seeking who we are is truly a piece of art which could be confusing and frustrating sometime, but should also be a never-ending and self-improving process because everything is changing, including us and our taste.

If you want to put a pink bow on, do it! If you wish to add an edgy twist to your outfit, don't hesitate! If you'd love to wear your mom's over-sized vintage sweater, why think twice?

Skirt On Pants

Recently, I gave the Skirt 'N' Sneaker combo a try and ended up loving it (read the post here). Today, I'd like to bravely embrace another trend that I felt weird about: Skirt on Pants.

Don't like the sound of it? Well, hold your thoughts for just a second. Trust me, at first I couldn't believe that this trend would take over the runways and the streets. However, the you-don't-know-till-you-try-it philosophy kept ringing like a wake-up call besides my ears, so I had no choice but putting my biasses away and testing it out. The result? I not only didn't sense any awkwardness at all, but truly loved how cute and warm this outfit turned out to be.

V-Day Gift Guide: What NOT To Buy

Dear all,
Tomorrow will be THE day to celebrate love and romance. Whether you are in a relationship, single, or married, you should go right ahead to take advantage of this special occasion. If you are still doing the very last-minute Valentine's Day shopping, you can check out some gift ideas(here)I shared couple of weeks ago. However, gift guides are literally everywhere. So today, instead of suggesting you what to buy, I'd like to tell you what NOT to buy.

If you are chasing after a Chinese girl, or just started dating a Chinese boy, you'd better avoid the following four gift ideas. (Just for fun!)

1. Clock
One thing you should never give a Chinese is clock as its pronunciation is exactly the same as another Chinese word: death (or the end of something). So giving a clock as a gift means you are wishing the recipient an early departure of life or away from something good. In addition, clock also symbolizes time is running out, so ending a relationship and life is the message you are sending. Although watch has totally different pronunciation as clock, its generally not a pleasant gift to give a Chinese either.

2. Umbrella
Another gift idea that may seem innocent and gesture could turn into something unpleasant. In Chinese, umbrella has the similar pronunciation as "separation", so it's not hard to understand why giving umbrellas in Chinese culture is a no-no.

3. Shoes (especially running shoes)
This one started as a joke but has turned into a quite serious taboo in Chinese gift giving. As your partner/friend might walk/run away in those shoes you are giving her/him, it's better not to give your loved ones this gift.

4. White Flowers
Giving flowers in all cultures is considered a romantic act and the shade of white is generally seen as purity and innocence. However, in Chinese culture, white flowers are normally brought to funerals or hospitals, so it has been associated with death, illness, and so negativity and bad luck.

Okay, to be honest, I've found these gift taboos very funny and ridiculous some time, so I usually look at it as an entertainment. "Love" is the strongest among all which I believe can easily melt all of these superstitious transitions. Mr. S gave me a pair of moccasin as a gift on our first Valentine's Day, and since then, we have been walking along side by side for more than four years now, and our relationship is still going strong. I didn't run away in those moccasins, did I?

Wish you all a Happy and Loving Valentine's Day!

Olympics Spirit with Trainers

It's not a secrete that athletic footwear has been introduced front and centre onto both the runways and streets. The girl-meets-boy vibe and the I-don't-care-of-what-you-think look have been very popular since last year, and no surprise, this "trainers-transformation" is still going strong in 2014.

However, personally I always had mixd feelings towards this trend and especially couldn't accept the skirt 'n' sneaker combo. Until very recently, the more I look at this style the more I actually enjoy it and eager to give it a try. So, this is how the story goes. I put on my trainers with my skirt, AND, I loved it! In addition, with the kick-off of Sochi Winter Olympics, I figured the timing of rocking this sporty look is quite appropriate.

Peter Pilotto For Target Takes Me Right to Spring (Part 2)

This Sunday will be THE date when Peter Pilotto's special collection hits Target stores worldwide.

Your impression on this collection might only come from the look book or fashion magazines. So I have picked two of my favourite pieces from this collection to showcase two different looks in the hope of giving you a better feel of what the pieces would look like on every day people and some ideas of how to wear it before you pull the tripper to make the purchase. In yesterday's post (here), I bravely rocked on this dress in Toronto's crazy snow storm and created a romantic yet classic look. Today, I'm sharing my take on a business casual look with this gorgeous blazer.

Peter Pilotto For Target Takes Me Right To Spring (Part 1)

Only 3 days left till the collection of Peter Pilotto lands at Target stores worldwide.

Are you excited? I was lucky enough to try on some of my favourite pieces from the collection and when I saw this dress in their look book, I immediately fell in love with its phenomenal prints and colours, which simply adds plenty of cheerfulness to these snowy cold winter days.

As the length of the dress does not compromise with my body, I decided to make it shorter by folding over the materials at waistline and adding a belt to secure it. And I'm quite happy about the result. What do you think?

Thoughts on Valentine's Day

Yes, one of the most romantic days of the year is just around the corner. Are you excited? Ready? Well, sadly, sometimes I do feel that Valentin's Day has been over-commercialized and could actually be overwhelming and even depressing. Do I HAVE TO buy her something expensive to show that I love her? What should I get for my boyfriend in order to let him know that he is important to me? Well, how I look at it is that this is just ONE of the 365 days of the year to show your love to those who are important to you. It doesn't really matter what gift I get on that day particularly, but the love, respect, time and care that I have received during the rest of the year. There is a saying: Make everyday a Valentine's Day! :)

Also, when I was in China, I thought Valentines Day was about celebrating love just between couples. However, since I moved to Canada, I'v learnt that anybody could be your valentine. Your teacher, your sister, your mom, or your friend...

Double Trouble

If you have been reading my blog on a regular basis, you may have already noticed that I'd always like adding colours to and mixing different prints with my winter outfits. I'm not a big believer of the theory: Winter=Black.

The beautiful blossom adds so much cheer and colour to spring; the hot temperature makes summer so attractive; and the fallen leaves take autumn to a romantic atmosphere. But how about winter? Besides the dirty and slushy roads, the never-ending cold days, as well as the gloomy and dark feelings, what else is left? Don't get me wrong though, the magnificently beautiful white snow, the winter activities, and the opportunity to play with layers are all the factors that make winter a unique and incredible season.  But after living in the minus temperature for almost half of the year, waking up while the sun is still sleeping, and unable to walk around local boutiques on Queen St, I have to admit that I do get the winter blues and need some bright colours to cheer me up.
